At the Barber Shop — First Customer

Imagine you are Alex, the barber. Your goal is to understand exactly what Ryan wants before you start cutting — including length, taper, neckline, beard shape, and the details he does not want changed.

Before You Listen — Useful Vocabulary

Review these expressions before listening. The examples below do not appear in the audio.

tidy-up

A small haircut or grooming adjustment intended to make the hair look neater without changing the overall style dramatically.

Example: I don’t need a full haircut today — just a quick tidy-up around the sides.

blend it up

To gradually transition from shorter hair to longer hair so there is no harsh line between lengths.

Example: Keep the bottom short and blend it up smoothly towards the crown.

skin fade

A haircut where the shortest section is cut extremely close to the skin before gradually becoming longer.

Example: He asked for a skin fade with more length left on top.

soft taper

A gradual, subtle reduction in hair length, usually around the sides and back, without an extreme fade.

Example: A soft taper would keep the haircut clean without making the sides too short.

square off

To create a straight, defined edge rather than a rounded shape, especially around the neckline.

Example: Could you square off the back rather than leave it curved?

neckline

The lower edge of the hair or beard where it meets the neck.

Example: The barber cleaned up the neckline without taking it too high.

matte clay

A hair styling product that provides hold and texture without creating a shiny finish.

Example: He uses matte clay to add texture while keeping a natural look.

spot on

Informal British and Australian English meaning exactly right or completely accurate.

Example: Your description of the problem was spot on.

Listening Recall — Explain What You Understood

Type or speak a short summary. This section checks whether you can reconstruct the situation in your own words.

Do not copy the transcript. Reconstruct Ryan’s request as if you were the barber who must remember the haircut, beard and styling details before starting.

Your task: In at least 50 words, summarize the haircut Ryan wants, what must stay longer or lower, how the back should be finished, and what Alex should do with the beard and moustache.
You can type, or use speech-to-text if your browser supports it.
