Shopping for Souvenirs in Venice

Can you shop for meaningful souvenirs, understand authenticity and prices, protect fragile purchases, and solve a receipt problem in natural Italian?
How it works

Read, listen, or speak your way through a realistic souvenir-shopping experience in a small Venetian shop. Choose or say the reply you would actually use in Italian.

Some replies are clear, polite, and commercially realistic. Others confuse craftsmanship with age, mistake “Murano style” for authentic Murano production, misunderstand price ranges, mishandle fragile items, bargain inappropriately, or ignore an error on the receipt.

When communication breaks down, repair it with phrases such as: “Mi scusi, non ho capito bene”, “Quindi questo costa cinquantotto euro, giusto?”, “Che cosa vuol dire…?”, “Può spiegarmi la differenza?”, “Possiamo controllare insieme?” and “Credo ci sia un problema con lo scontrino”. At the end, review your result and submit it to your teacher/tutor.

Scene context
  • You are an American traveler shopping for gifts in a small souvenir and artisan shop in Venice. You want meaningful items that are easy to take home.
  • You need to explain what you are looking for, understand materials and craftsmanship, distinguish authentic Murano production from generic glass, compare prices, pack fragile items, handle gift packaging, pay, manage receipts, ask about tax-free shopping, and resolve a billing mistake.
  • Your goal is to communicate naturally in Italian, understand the intention behind real shop language, and repair misunderstandings calmly and precisely.
