Day 1-1: UK Immigration / Passport Control

Can you answer a UK Border Force officer clearly and enter the UK for your overnight Heathrow layover?
How it works

Read, listen, or speak your way through a realistic UK passport control interview. Choose the reply you would actually say when you need to enter the UK temporarily for an airline hotel layover.

Some answers are calm, clear, and natural. Other answers are too vague, too casual, or misunderstand immigration phrases like “purpose of visit”, “onward journey”, “overnight layover”, “hotel voucher”, “landside”, “Arrivals”, “surname”, and “hand luggage”.

You can recover by using repair language such as: “Sorry, let me clarify”, “Just to confirm…”, “I’m only staying overnight”, “My onward flight is tomorrow”, “The airline arranged the hotel”, and “I can show you the email”. At the end, review your result and submit it to your teacher/tutor.

Scene context
  • Your connecting flight was changed, so your London layover is now much longer than expected: about sixteen hours.
  • The airline has provided an airport hotel, so you must enter the UK temporarily, pass immigration, go to the hotel, and return to Heathrow the next day.
  • Your goal is to pass passport control smoothly and leave with a clear plan: enter landside, go to Arrivals, collect the hotel voucher or shuttle details, sleep overnight, and continue to New York tomorrow.
